WHAT IT IS

1

What is "Cool Media Hot Talk Show" exactly?

This is a project which combines:
- a live public event in the popular form of a talk show broadcasted live on the internet;
- interactive online tools to program the event collectively, and participate in it directly;
- extra publishing and information exchange tools.

2

What does the title of the project "Cool Media Hot Talk Show" stand for?

"Cool Media" refers to the term proposed by Marshall McLuhan, the Canadian writer and media theorist. "Cool media," according to McLuhan, are media which are high in audience participation in opposition to "hot media" which are low in participation. Thus the title stands for promotion of the idea of participatory media. To learn more about both concepts developed by McLuhan you can read Marshall McLuhan’s book "Understanding Media. The Extensions of Man." "Hot Talk" suggests participants to take a rather hard critical stance on issues they propose to discuss, as well as the positions of speakers they would like to question. "Cool Media Hot Talk Show" altogether stands for an original interactive participatory media format for organising and executing a talk show on critical issues.

3

What is special about the idea and format of "Cool Media Hot Talk Show"?

"Cool Media Hot Talk Show" has a hybrid format both in terms of method and content. It combines the popular entertaining approach of mass media towards public debates with advanced radically democratic interactive tools for the engagement of the public into very process of the programming of debates.

4

What does the theme "on Art & Media" suppose to highlight?

The theme "on Art & Media" is an invitation for everybody interested in media art internationally to communicate freely to a broader audience the questions s/he is concerned with. These questions can refer to a variety of issues, whether you seek for explanations of an artist what his/her project is about, clarification by a curator of the exhibition's or a festival's idea, question the content of a publication. You can also raise more general questions about the agenda of media art, like for example the long debated issue, "is "media art" a proper term and what exactly it stands for?" Even if you are not sure whether your question is relevant and clear to others, do not hesitate to look for clarifications by sharing and discussing your concerns on the forum related to your entry. Your initial ideas can probably evolve into something else as a result of it.

5

What are the objectives of "on Art & Media" talk show series?

There are few key objectives behind the theme "on Art & Media" as it is approached in the framework of the "Cool Media Hot Talk Show" project:
- to bridge the discursive gap between the professional media art community and the audience by questioning conventional "insiders" terms and concepts, as well as values;
- to bring together professional expertise and common sense curiousness in order to enhance critical public discussion about media art;
- to stimulate a qualitative critical approach towards the discussion and judgement of art projects, where the public can participate actively.

6

For whom is the D.I.Y. "Cool Media Hot Talk Show. on Art & Media" meant? Who is its target audience?

"Cool Media Hot Talk Show. on Art & Media" welcomes everybody, those who know a lot about media art, as well as those who have only a general vague, or hardly any idea at all what it is about, but who are curious to explore the area, ask questions and gain knowledge. It is meant to be a space where professionals (artists, curators, critics, theorists, art historians) meet the general audience and ask each other easy and difficult questions. Although this does not mean that there are prescribed roles for participants. Please feel free to raise topics, propose speakers, and ask questions that you consider important, whoever you are. At the end the public decides!

HOW IT WORKS

7

What is the "Cool Media Hot Talk Show" LIVE EVENT and how can I program it?

- You can propose a topic to be discussed, a speaker to be invited, a question to be asked by submitting your proposal. After filling in and submitting the form, your proposal will be automatically added to the database. Several proposals are possible.
NB Please notice that your proposals should be related to the main theme of the ongoing series of talk shows. The current main theme is "on Art & Media".
If your proposals are not related to the theme, or their content violates the rules of conduct declared on the web-site "Cool Media Hot Talk Show", representatives of the project team are authorised to remove your submission without prior notification.
- You can vote for the proposals of others. All proposals are automatically included into the charts according to the results of the public votes.
- You can establish relations between proposals, where you can determine which questions can be addressed to which speakers and to which topics they can be related. These relations will form data clouds which will determine possible talk show scenarios.
- You can discuss proposals by adding your comments underneath. Your proposal can already be considered as a beginning of the discussion.
- You can discuss and evaluate by voting on the final scenario of the talk show represented as a data-cloud at the page "Show Scenarios".

How is the final decision about the LIVE EVENT scenario made?

The proposed topics, speakers and questions related to each other and highest in rating, are automatically organised in a data cloud, which is represented at the front page in the section PRELIMINARY LINE-UP.
